When the Chinese Facebook meets Silicon Valley

Renren.com is known as the “Facebook of China” but Renren group is more than that. It also owns the “Youtube of China”, “Groupon of China”, and more! And, it has a global dream – Renren is partnering with Bay Area Incubator Appsurdity, Inc. to expand into international market. Appsurdity launched a mobile group chat app called QUAD (www.quadapp.com) last month and aims to revolutionize how groups communicate on college campuses.

Joseph Chen (陈一舟, Founder and CEO of Renren) and Matthew Murphy (Founder and CEO of Appsurdity) will share with Penn State some exclusive behind-the-scene stories of what it takes to launch a successful start-up today at 8pm in 100 Thomas.

Mr. Chen is a pioneer of China’s Internet industry. Before founding Renren, Mr. Chen was the co-founder, chairman and chief executive officer of ChinaRen.com, a first-generation SNS in China and one of China’s most visited websites in 1999. He served as SVP of Sohu.com after ChinaRen.com was acquired by Sohu in 2000. Mr. Chen holds a BA in Physics from the University of Delaware, a MS in Engineering from MIT, and MBA from Stanford University.

Matthew Murphy, Founder and CEO of Appsurdity

Mr. Murphy is an innovative marketer that enjoys challenging the ordinary to create extraordinary experiences for consumers. Previously, Mr. Murphy was the CMO at Chegg as well as the Co-Founder & CMO of Lemon.com. He ran the global advertising and media for E*TRADE Financial and earned numerous awards for his work including a Clio, Effie and Stevie Award. Mr. Murphy holds a BS in Finance from Santa Clara University and earned a MBA from The Christos M.Cotsakos College of Business at William Patterson University.
